Our pick of the best walks & hiking tracks in cute Arrowtown

We enjoyed some excellent walking tracks in the tiny gold rush town of Arrowtown. The council has been busy, the walking and biking will keep you full on all day.  Arrowtown is just sooooo cute, it has a real historic feel with it’s one way street, charming village shops, big trees and lots of cafes to choose from.

Another awesome way to see Arrowtown if you don’t want to walk around is to do a self-guided tour of Arrowtown and Gibbston Valley on a brand new premium E-Bike or Cruiser Hardtrail bike. If you can’t be bothered walking or biking then take a 3 hour Lord of the Rings Tour and see the film locations.

Frequently asked questions about Arrowtown

In any season the town is a photographer’s dream. Arrowtown is well known for its stunning autumn colours with beautiful gold and orange on the hillsides and surrounding areas during April and May. The Arrowtown Autumn Festival in mid-April is well worth a visit.

It can get really cold in Arrowtown so be prepared, take a hat and gloves if you’re walking in autumn or winter. Even in summer, take a warm jacket just in case the weather turns bad.

No, is the quick answer on any DOC land, although you can get a permit to fly your drone (from DOC), including private and non-commercial use. Applying for the permit for the first time can be a little tricky, there is a free pre-application meeting then you need to contact the local iwi to assess whether your proposed activity will have any cultural effects. Oh, and it’ll cost you quite a bit for each DOC region you apply to use your drone. Use DOC Maps to help you find each region.

We love going to Arrowtown in autumn just before the colourful leaves fall off the trees. However, that doesn’t mean it’s no good any other time, it’s a great place to visit all year round. Arrowtown weather can be really unpredictable, so be a bit flexible with your plans and always take a jacket on any walk.
