Wenderholm Regional Park is a great place for families because it offers great walks, great views and a great beach—all of which you can get a taste of along the perimeter walk.

It is a loop track so start from any direction from the car park. Assuming you start on the right hand path, you will pass tall plane trees until you reach where the track hugs the road. You will find yourself in native bush. As you continue along the path, you will walk over streams and reach a lookout over Waiwera river and township.

The track is then a steep ascent to the top of Maungatauhoro, where you will find sea views of Motuora Island, Kawau Island and smaller islands, as well as a view of Mahurangi Regional Park. The track continues along the cliff’s edge before heading down towards Couldrey House and Gardens. The House is a slice of history hidden within Wenderholm Regional Park.

Keep an eye out for the pou whenua (carving), representing the connection between the people of the land to the historic events of the region.

The track is also full of native birds such as kererū, tūī, fantail, grey warblers and morepork.
