  • Area & Track History

The first Europeans settled in this area in the 1850s as farmers, this was followed by the discovery of gold in 1861. Getting around was a problem so in 1891 work began on a railway that would link Dunedin to the goldfields. It took stonemasons, blacksmiths and engineers 16 long hard years to complete the 150km track. In 1990 the railway from Middlemarch to Clyde was closed and rails and sleepers removed. In 2000 the old railway was opened up as the Otago Central Rail Trail.

Points of interest along the walk

In the map above, if you zoom in on the walk, you’ll see all the following track points and their location. Each point has photos along with a description about each one.

Point 1: Clyde, Rail Trail

You have to cross the Clyde Alexandra Road to get to the start of the Otago Central Rail Trail. It is only 8 km into Alexandra. If you feel like a good bike ride, Middlemarch is only 150km down the Trail. At the start are clean toilets and a place to sit and sort out your gear.

Point 2: Alexandra, Rail Trail

It was a good ride. I though it was a slight down hill ride for the last twenty minutes. There is a toilet 15 minutes into the ride, just after Muttontown Viaduct. The trail runs along side the main road so help is not far away. Now I will have to leave the great Otago Central Rail Trail and head back to the camp ground.
