This Lake Tekapo walk starts before entering Lake Tekapo township.

Start before the Church of the Good Shepherd, where you can take in the blue lake and the white-capped mountains in the distance. Make sure you also stop and admire the Church itself before moving on along the walk.

The walk then continues across Lake Tekapo footbridge and along the lakeshore. This walk is mostly to take in the views of the lake so make sure to take your time and even read the information panels along the way that highlight some of the history along the walk. Continue past the hydro outlet and the footpath continues to the campground and Tekapo hot pools complex.

The best time of year to visit Lake Tekapo and the surrounding area is in the spring, more specifically around November and early December. This is because the lupin flowers will be in full bloom. There is no doubt that you will be completely surrounded by the pink, blue and purple flowers throughout this walk. They grow on the shore of the lake and are impossible to miss.

Enjoy the Tekapo hot pools after your walk

Especially wonderful in winter, but any time of the year is good, finish off your hike or walk in Tekapo with a soak in the hot springs. If you don’t mind what time you go you can get cheaper entry tickets to the hot pools on this link.  The pools are open every day except Christmas day. There is a great day spa and cafe, bar to enjoy as well. The hot pools overlook stunning Lake Tekapo.
