Caroline Bay is Timaru’s front yard, and this loop walk is a good way to see most of it in under an hour. You get a mix of history, gardens, coastal views and a lighthouse sighting, all within easy walking distance of the CBD. It’s flat enough for prams and older walkers, and there’s enough to look at to keep kids occupied too.
Getting There
Turn onto Port Loop Road from Evans Street (Theodosia Street), which is Timaru’s main road. There’s a car park at the loop. The walk starts at the Piazza on the far side of the railway track.
If you’re coming by bus, Timaru is served by InterCity coaches. The MyWay by Metro on-demand service also covers Timaru and can drop you close to the bay.
Drinking water is available in central Timaru. There are shops and cafes nearby on Stafford Street if you want to sort out a coffee before you go.
The Route
Start at the top of the Piazza steps. The Trevor Griffiths Rose Garden is right opposite and worth a look if the roses are out. Head along the Willow Walk to the right, then cross the road and follow the Memorial Walkway back towards the Caroline Bay Community Lounge.
The Memorial Wall runs along this section. It was built in the 1920s to commemorate New Zealanders who fought in the World Wars, and when it was built, it marked the actual edge of the sea. Everything between the wall and the current beach is reclaimed land.
Turn right onto the diagonal path at the fountain end of the wall. The Palliser Fountain is on the corner of the lawn on the left. This whole area gets busy over Christmas during the Caroline Bay Carnival, so if you’re visiting in late December or early January, expect crowds.
Turn right at the end of the wall, pass behind the Community Lounge, cross the car park, and continue past the skate park. Follow the road up to the railway bridge.
At the railway bridge you have a choice. Take the cliff path up to the Benvenue Cliffs for views over Caroline Bay and a sighting of Blackett’s Lighthouse to the north. It adds a bit of height and is worth doing if the weather’s clear. Alternatively, skip the cliffs and turn left at the railway to stay on the flat.
If you take the cliff path, cross the footbridge over the railway line onto Benvenue Avenue. The ASB Tennis Centre and the CBAY Trust Aoraki Centre are on your left. Walk back down Virtue Avenue, then follow the track to the right behind the Bay tennis courts to the Aviary.
From the Aviary, take the diagonal path to the right and turn left at the Bay Tea Rooms. Continue through the Sound Shell until you’re back at the Piazza. From here you can detour down to the beach or out to the lookout if you’ve got time.
If you want to extend the walk, you can continue south along Marine Parade onto Port Loop Road and Hayes Street, which connects with the South Beach Coastal Walk.
What You’ll See
The bay itself is the main attraction. Caroline Bay has a sandy beach that’s popular with families in summer. Views stretch north towards Blackett’s Lighthouse, and on a clear day you can see back towards the Kaikoura Ranges. The Benvenue Cliffs section gives you the best elevated view of the whole bay.
The Trevor Griffiths Rose Garden is a genuine highlight if you’re visiting when it’s in bloom (summer is your best bet). There’s also a Peony Garden to look out for along the Willow Walk section.
The Aviary is along the route and makes a good stop if you’ve got kids with you. There’s a picnic area nearby too.
When to Go
This walk works any time of year. Summer is the busiest, especially over Christmas when the bay carnival is on. If you want the walk to yourself, a winter morning is ideal.
The cliffs section can be exposed in wind, so pick a calm day if that’s your route.
Important Stuff
Dogs are allowed on a lead throughout the walk. On the beach itself, dogs are only permitted in winter.
Toilets are dotted along the route and easy to find. There’s no shortage of parking at the Port Loop Road car park.
The walk is pushchair-friendly on the main route. The Benvenue Cliffs detour involves a footbridge and some uneven ground, so that section is less suitable for prams.
Other Timaru Walks Nearby
You can easily combine this walk with others in central Timaru. The Central Timaru Historic Walk covers the CBD heritage buildings and takes about 30 minutes. The South Beach Coastal Walk continues south along the bay from Caroline Bay and is an easy 1.7 km. For something longer, the Dashing Rocks Walk is a 4 km loop starting at Caroline Bay. The Otipua Wetlands Walk and Otipua Creek Walk are south of the city if you want to knock off a few walks in a day. For a bush option, the Claremont Bush Walk is 3 km and a nice contrast to the coastal stuff.
