Village Charm and Coastal Foreshore

Howick’s the heart of East Auckland. It’s got that established seaside suburb vibe, historical village, decent shops and cafés, and a long foreshore that’s perfect for walking. The area’s been around since the 1840s, and you can still feel that history in the village.

The walks here are mostly coastal and flat, connecting to the wider East Auckland network. You can start in Howick and walk all the way to Pakuranga or Bucklands Beach if you’re keen. Or just do a casual hour along the foreshore and grab brunch after. It’s that kind of place – relaxed, accessible, with everything you need nearby.

I reckon Howick’s one of those suburbs that gets walking right. The foreshore paths are well-maintained, there’s always somewhere for coffee, and parking’s not too painful. It’s not dramatic scenery, but it’s really pleasant and convenient.

The walks range from 30 minutes to 3+ hours depending on how far you extend them. Most are flat and suitable for all ages.

Wades Walkway Whitford

This walkway connects Howick area through to Whitford via farm tracks and reserves. It’s a nice alternative to the coastal walks, more rural and quiet.

What you’ll get:

  • Farm tracks through paddocks
  • Creek crossings with small bridges
  • Quieter than the foreshore
  • Links to Beachlands area walks
  • Native planting in sections

The full walkway is about 4-5km one way from the Howick end to Whitford. It’s mostly flat with well-formed tracks. You’re walking through farmland and reserves, so there are gates to open and close.

This is good if you want something different from the endless foreshore walking. It feels more rural, and you’ll see hardly anyone on weekdays. The track can be muddy after rain, especially the farm sections.

Distance: ~4-5km one way | Time: 1-1.5hrs each way | Difficulty: Easy-Moderate
Best for: Rural walking, quiet tracks, linking to Whitford/Beachlands

Howick Foreshore Walk

The classic Howick walk. The foreshore path runs the length of Howick Beach from Bucklands Beach in the east to Picton Street in the west.

What you’ll get:

  • Flat coastal walking with harbour views
  • Rangitoto and island views
  • Beach access for swimming

You can walk as much or as little as you want. The full Howick foreshore is about 2-3km, taking 40-60 minutes. The path’s sealed or well-formed the whole way. Perfect for buggies, bikes, scooters.

High tide is better for proper sea views, low tide lets you walk on the sand. Either way it’s pleasant. The beach is good for swimming, shallow and safe, popular with families.

This is Howick’s go-to walk. You’ll see regulars doing their morning laps, people walking dogs, families at the beach. It’s got that nice community feel.

Distance: ~2-3km | Time: 40-60min | Difficulty: Easy
Best for: Coastal stroll, families, exercise loops

Howick Historical Village Walk

A short walk around and through the Howick Historical Village. Good if you’re into history or have kids who need entertaining.

What you’ll get:

  • Historic buildings from the 1840s-1900s
  • Costumed staff explaining history
  • Small museum

The village itself is small, you can walk around it in 20-30 minutes. If you go inside the buildings and chat to the staff, allow 1-2 hours. It’s well done and genuinely interesting, especially for kids.

You can combine this with the foreshore walk, the village is right near the beach. Do the historical village, then walk along the foreshore for coffee.

Distance: ~1km around grounds | Time: 30min-2hrs (depending on building visits) | Difficulty: Easy

When to Go

Best Seasons:

  • Summer (Dec-Feb): Perfect for beach walking and swimming. Go early morning or late afternoon to avoid heat. Foreshore gets busy but never crowded.
  • Autumn (Mar-May): My pick. Still warm enough for swimming, less busy, beautiful light for photos. The pohutukawa are stunning.
  • Winter (Jun-Aug): Quieter and fresh. The coastal wind’s cold so layer up. Good for brisk walks without crowds. Clear winter days have great visibility.
  • Spring (Sep-Nov): Warming up nicely. The foreshore comes alive with people as weather improves. Good time for longer walks.

Best Times of Day:

  • Early morning (7-9am) if you want it quiet – locals doing their exercise laps
  • Late afternoon (4-6pm) for evening strolls and sunset views
  • Weekday mornings are quietest
  • Weekend mornings get busier but it’s still relaxed

Tide Considerations:

  • High tide is better for sea views and defined paths
  • Low tide exposes more beach for walking and rock pools
  • Mid-tide is fine for foreshore walking
  • Check NIWA tides if planning beach exploration

My Honest Take on Howick

Howick’s got really solid walking options. The foreshore is the obvious one, nice and easy, well-maintained, good facilities. It’s not going to blow your mind, but it does exactly what it should. Pleasant coastal walking with cafés nearby.

What I like about Howick is the convenience. You can walk, grab brunch, maybe swim, all within a small area. Everything’s close and parking’s not too painful. The historical village adds a bit of interest if you’re into that.

The foreshore can feel a bit samey if you do it every day, which is why Wades Walkway is a good alternative. Bit more variety, more rural, quieter. Good for mixing things up.

The connections to other areas are excellent. You can create pretty much any length walk you want by linking to Bucklands Beach, Pakuranga, wherever. The Coastal Rotary Walkway network is really good in this area.

For visitors, I’d say combine the historical village with a foreshore walk and lunch in the village. That’s a nice half-day that shows you what Howick’s about. For locals, the foreshore’s your daily walk and Wades Walkway is your weekend alternative.

Who’ll love Howick walks:

  • Families (excellent beaches and facilities)
  • Local residents wanting regular walking routes
  • Anyone after flat, easy coastal paths
  • People who like village atmosphere and cafés
  • Walkers wanting to connect to wider network
  • History buffs (the historical village is good)

Who might not:

  • If you want wilderness walks (this is suburban foreshore)
  • If you need dramatic scenery (it’s pleasant but subtle)
  • If you hate beaches and harbours (that’s most of what you get)
  • If you’re after challenging terrain (it’s all flat)

Connecting Routes

Howick is perfectly positioned in the East Auckland coastal network:

East to Bucklands Beach: 30-40 minute walk along the foreshore. Easy and scenic.

West to Pakuranga: About 1 hour to Pakuranga shops, 2-3 hours to Panmure Basin if you keep going.

North to Whitford/Beachlands: Via Wades Walkway through farmland. Different vibe from coastal walks.

South to Mellons Bay and Half Moon Bay: Continue south along coast, eventually reaching Half Moon Bay Marina.
