This is the town centre walk for Whangaparaoa. It starts at the library on Whangaparaoa Road and follows the Rata Road walkway down through reserves to Stanmore Bay Beach. It’s mostly paved, dogs are welcome on leash, and it works well for families with a pram. There’s a skate park, splash pad at the leisure centre in summer, and a playground right on the beach at the end. Nothing dramatic, just a pleasant way to get from the town centre to the beach without walking along the main road.

The Route
- Start at Whangaparaoa Library on Whangaparaoa Road. Have a look at the colourful artwork on the building facade facing the road, it’s called Flora, made by Jeff Thomson in 2013
- Cross Whangaparaoa Road at the lights and follow the gravel path downhill, keeping to the left of Whangaparaoa College grounds
- Good views over the peninsula and coastline on the way down
- There’s a steep section between here and Rata Road, be prepared for it, not ideal if you have a heavy pram
- At the bottom, turn right and follow Rata Road to the end, then follow the signs onto the path
- Keep an eye out for ducks at the Rata Road pond
- The path widens into a flat, easy walkway through Rata Reserve
- Pass Stanmore Bay Leisure Centre on your right, the outdoor splash pad here has free entry in summer
- Cross Brightside Road to reach Stanmore Bay Beach
- Playground, toilets, picnic tables and barbecues right on the beachfront
- Walk back the same way, or arrange a pick-up at the beach
Good to Know
- Steep section near the college — the downhill from Whangaparaoa Road to Rata Road is steep in places. You can push a pram through but it takes some effort
- School hours — the section past Whangaparaoa College gets busy with students at school start and finish times, worth timing around that
- Dogs on leash — welcome the whole way
- Stanmore Bay Leisure Centre splash pad — free entry in summer, good for kids
- Stanmore Bay Beach — white sand, good swimming, playground and toilets at Brightside Road end
