There are so many great walks in Queenstown, it’s hard to decide which are the best. I really like the walk around Moke Lake – although I confess I biked it! Lake Hayes is also a favorite. See the full list of walks a bit further down this page.

I haven’t managed to hike the Queenstown Hill Track yet, but I will next time we are in town. It’s meant to have more fantastic views of Queenstown. Or better yet, walk up the Tiki Trail to the top of the Skyline Gondola and paraglide down – wow, that’s fun.

Must Do While in Queenstown

Skyline Gondola & Tiki Trail

Experience the awesome views from the top of the Skyline Gondola. Take a one-way trip on the Gondola and save money! Mad as it may seem, I actually walked up the Tiki Trail to the top of the Skyline Gondola. This rewarded me with totally stunning views over Queenstown and the amazing Remarkables mountains.

Far less exhausting would be to enjoy the ride up and walk back down, but then you miss out on the great workout! You only pay for a one-way ticket which you buy at the top.

Planning Your Queenstown Walks

Best Time to Visit Queenstown for Walking

  • Summer (December-February): Warmest weather, longest days, gardens and wildflowers at their best. Busiest season.
  • Autumn (March-May): Stunning fall colors, fewer crowds, pleasant temperatures. My favorite time to visit.
  • Winter (June-August): Snow-capped mountains provide dramatic backdrops. Some higher elevation tracks may be closed or icy.
  • Spring (September-November): Wildflowers emerging, moderate weather, good walking conditions.

What to Bring on Queenstown Walks

  • Water – Essential even on short walks, Queenstown weather can get warm
  • Sun protection – Sunscreen, hat, sunglasses – UV is strong even on cloudy days
  • Layers – Weather can change quickly in the mountains
  • Camera – You’ll want it for the incredible views
  • Snacks – Especially important for longer walks
  • Good footwear – Trails range from sealed paths to rough mountain tracks
  • Map or GPS – Download offline maps before you go

Queenstown Walking Safety Tips

  • Check weather forecasts before heading out – mountain weather changes fast
  • Tell someone your plans for longer or remote walks
  • Start early for mountain walks – afternoon weather can deteriorate quickly
  • Stick to marked tracks – it’s easier to get lost than you think
  • Carry a fully charged phone
  • Know your fitness limits – some walks are genuinely challenging
  • Bring extra food and water – always pack more than you think you’ll need
