The track starts on the south side of the island at the beach and climbs steadily uphill. While the elevation gain is moderate, there are some steeper sections and stairs towards the top. The well-marked path makes navigation easy, and the total distance is less than a kilometer each way. Remember to wear sturdy shoes with good grip for the climb.
Breathtaking Panoramas
After a manageable ascent, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views from the lookout point. There is a newly built viewing platform big enough for everyone. The 360-degree panorama allows you to take in the entire Bay of Islands, with its numerous islands, sparkling waters, and lush coastline. On a clear day, the visibility can be incredible, making it a perfect spot for photography or simply soaking up the scenery.
There is also a small viewing spot just before the top, this looks out to the other side of the island.
You’ll also get to see the crystal clear waters of the beach below with it’s little inlets. Take a very short walk through the grass to another beautiful beach for a swim!
Best Time to Do the Walk:
For the most enjoyable experience, I recommend planning your Akeake Peninsula Walk during the end of spring (November) or the beginning of autumn (March). These shoulder seasons offer pleasant temperatures and avoid the summer crowds. Although I did this walk in February and the weather was totally stunning.
How to get to Roberton Island
Reaching this paradise is straightforward however you will have to be in your own boat or be part of a tour that stops at Roberton Island. From Paihia, the main town in the Bay of Islands, tours depart Roberton Island, delivering you directly to the beach.
Things to remember:
- Wear sturdy shoes with good grip.
- Bring water, especially if completing the walk on a warm day.
- Sun protection is recommended for the exposed sections.
- Leave enough time for lunch at the cafe and relax on a bean bag on the beach at Otehei Bay before your ferry arrives.
