Here’s my pick of the best walks in Taupo
Taupo has stunning scenery and an abundance of walking tracks. Whether you craved thrills or were a nature enthusiast, there is a track waiting to be discovered.
My first stop had been Aratiatia Rapids. The easy boardwalk winding through native bush felt almost magical, leading me to viewing platforms where the power of nature roared. The thundering rapids, unleashed from the Taupo Hydroelectric Power Station, were an incredible sight to behold.
Next, I went to Huka Falls. The short walk alongside the Waikato River was a breeze, and the reward at the end was unreal. The sheer volume of water cascading over the falls – a staggering 220,000 liters every second – left me speechless.
For a change of pace, I embarked on the Kawakawa Bay track. This scenic loop offered a delightful dose of lakeside tranquility. The 4-kilometer walk provided stunning lake views, shady native bush tracks, and the chance to spot some of New Zealand’s unique birdlife. Packing a picnic lunch had turned this into a perfect afternoon spent soaking in the serenity.
Feeling like a challenge, I conquered Mt Tauhara, an extinct volcano. The various walking tracks offer options for all fitness levels. I opted for the climb to the summit crater, rewarded with panoramic views that stretched for miles. Remember, sturdy footwear and checking the weather forecast are crucial before attempting this hike.
These were just a few highlights of the incredible walking adventures Taupo had to offer. See the walks below for more details.
