From the Mt Fyffe car park, follow the most obvious trail that leads up the mountain.

It is an old 4WD track and, though it sometimes twists and turns and narrows, is not the most interesting track. The terrain is easy but it is the climb that is challenging. It is a long consistent steep climb to the Mt Fyffe Hut.

Luckily, there are plenty of places to sit and rest along the way. These places happen to be lookouts that simply get better the higher you go. The best view is, of course, from the hut itself (at least for this walk). Enjoy the view of the Kaikoura plains, the coast and the mountains all from one track.

For a more challenging hike, continue on to the My Fyffe summit which is on a walking track instead of a 4WD track. There are also several other tracks, like the Spaniards hut, that take you back down the mountain.

However, whichever way you choose will be steeper than the other, so make sure to wear proper footwear. This walk is definitely one that’s hard on the knees and feet on the way down!

Fly over the whales on this stunning scenic flight which includes Kaikoura and it’s coastline.
