The Takapuna Explorer is an 8km loop starting at the Takapuna Boat Ramp. You head south along Takapuna Beach with Rangitoto to your left across the water, then turn inland through quiet suburban reserves including Northboro Reserve and the Patuone estuary walkway, before returning to the start along The Promenade past the Bruce Mason Theatre. The walk takes 90 to 120 minutes, suits average fitness, and dogs are welcome off-leash on the beach section (hours vary by season).

I walked this on a sunny May day and the beach was buzzing. Dog walkers everywhere, which just adds to the atmosphere. If there’s a decent wind up, keep an eye on the car park at the start, there are usually windsurfers launching and it’s quite the spectacle before you’ve even set off.
The walk heads south along the beach first, then loops inland through some quiet reserves and along the Patuone estuary walkway before bringing you back to the start along The Promenade. It’s more varied than a straight beach walk. The estuary section is genuinely lovely, mangroves, tui, and a well-formed boardwalk that feels nothing like the suburban streets you’ve just walked through to get there.
The walk is hilly in places so you’ll get more of a workout than the easy rating suggests, but nothing that’ll have you struggling.
Takapuna Beach
You start by heading south along the beach with Rangitoto to your left across the water. On a clear day you’ll also pick up Auckland City, Mount Eden, and the Harbour Bridge.
Don’t rush past the houses along the beachfront either. The multimillion dollar mansions lining the shore are worth a look, and if you’re doing this walk in summer there’ll be swimmers, paddleboarders, and general beach chaos to keep you entertained.
The Estuary Section
The Patuone walkway is the part of this walk most people don’t know about. It runs along the edge of the estuary through mangroves, and it’s quiet in a way that surprises you given how central it is. The path was upgraded in 2023 and it’s now a proper boardwalk with viewing platforms. You’ll hear tui in there.
Back to the Start
The walk finishes along The Promenade past the Bruce Mason Theatre and back to the boat ramp. Reward yourself with a scoop of gelato from Takapuna Beach Cafe right at the finish. It’s made on site and they’ve won the NZ Ice Cream Supreme Award multiple times. Treat yourself.
Dogs
Takapuna Beach has off-leash rules that change with daylight saving. Check the Auckland Council website for current hours before you go. The rest of the walk is on streets and the estuary path where dogs need to be on lead.
Practical Notes
Toilets are at the boat ramp and along the beach. Plenty of cafes and restaurants on Hurstmere Road if you want something more substantial after the walk. There’s no children’s playground on this route.
