A quiet estuary walk right on the edge of town. The track follows Kaitoke Creek along the edge of the mudflats, with views across the water to Raglan and Karioi in the distance. Good for birdwatching, easy underfoot, and one of those walks that’s better at high tide.

The Walk

The track runs along Kaitoke Creek estuary for just over 2 km one way, accessible from three points, Robertson Street at one end, Wainui Road (near the school) at the other, and Kaitoke Street roughly in the middle. If you’re starting from Kaitoke Street you’ll only get half the walk, so begin at either end for the full length.

The surface is a mix of gravel paths and boardwalks over the mudflats. It’s mostly flat with a bit of gentle undulation through the bush sections. The path winds through regenerating native bush, harakeke, cabbage trees, tawa, and out over the water on boardwalk sections that put you right above the estuary.

Come at high tide if you can. The mudflats fill up and the whole estuary opens out. At low tide it’s still fine but you’re looking at mud rather than water.

Birdwatching

This is one of the better spots around Raglan for birds. Tūī in the bush, pīwakawaka (fantails) following you along the track, kōtare (kingfishers) perched over the water, and white-faced herons wading in the shallows at low tide.

Getting There

The walkway is right in Raglan, park on Robertson Street, Wainui Road near Raglan Area School, or Kaitoke Street depending on which end you want to start from. It’s an easy walk from the town centre.
