Getting there
Kulim Park is at 101 Kulim Avenue, Otumoetai, about 2.7 km from Tauranga CBD. There’s plenty of parking inside the park, drive through the gate and head to the end of the road. Public toilets are just behind you on the left as you park.
By bus, the Bayhopper route 1 or 2 towards Otumoetai stops on Otumoetai Road near Kulim Avenue, from there it’s a short walk down to the park.
The walk
From the Kulim Park car park, pick up the sealed path along the harbour edge heading north. The path is well maintained and wide enough for prams and wheelchairs. The harbour views open up straight away and on a clear day Mt Maunganui is right in front of you across the water. If the timing is right you’ll see cargo ships passing beneath the Mount, and there’s usually a few fishing boats zipping up and down the inner harbour too.
The return is the same path back to Kulim Park. The whole thing takes about an hour at a comfortable pace, a bit longer if you stop to read the history boards or let kids play at either end.
Good to know
Kulim Park has a playground, an outdoor adult gym, a petanque court, a basketball half-court, BBQ areas, and good swimming at high tide. The beach is a little muddy at low tide but fine for paddling. There’s a water tap just inside the gate on the right as you arrive.
The walk connects further north to Gordon Carmichael Reserve if you want to extend the day.
