The track follows the Waiotemarama Stream up through a gorge to a waterfall.
There are stunning views of the beautiful, 20-metre falls and the surrounding bush. The vegetation here is mainly Tawa and Taraire, and other assorted hardwoods.
Part of a track system (including a hut) that goes past a 20 metre waterfall and up to a loop track that goes through a nice, quiet Kauri Grove located near the top of a ridgeline. Track goes right through the grove with trees up to several metres in diameter. Grove is off the beaten tourist route and is rarely visited. Note that there is NO Kauri Dieback wash station here so be sure to carry the appropriate Trigene spray with brushes and use it! The track crosses a lot of bare Kauri roots. DoC needs to do a better job of establishing wash stations at these trail head locations.
Past the waterfall the track is rough in places and can be extremely slippery in wet weather.
From the waterfall the track crosses an unbridged stream. It then zigzags up past the top of the waterfall and up the ridge to a view point overlooking the gorge. It siddles around through hardwood forest to a saddle and up a face to enter a Kauri stand. From here the track climbs the main ridge to the start of the Hauturu Highpoint Track, then loops back down to rejoin the track out to the road end. There are nice views of Kauri from the loop.
