The walk to the lookout above Kiwiriki Bay is a great way to stretch the legs when you need a break from Sundowners/BBQs/Cleaning the catch/whatever.

We assume you are anchored in Kiwiriki Bay or have zoomed in from another bay in your high powered inflatable.

Find your way to the small beach at the south eastern end of Kiwiriki by dinghy/kayak/paddleboard. You can recognize the beach by the DOC sign above the beach telling you everything you are not allowed to do.

Follow the track southwards along the shoreline for 10-15 minutes until you come to the intersection for the Kaiarara track.

Turn left (northwards) and follow the track along the valley then climbing the ridge until you reach a reasonably flat stretch.

At the end of this, approx. 500m the track begins to descend, walk down the first few metres and the bush will clear to reveal fantastic views.

To the north west you have Kiwiriki Bay below you and beyond Port Fitzroy with Smokehouse Bay in the distance and even further you can see Governor’s Pass.

Boats up close in Kiwiriki Bay

Looking north thru the dip in the Kaiarara ridge you can see to Port Abercrombie and Nagle Cove in the distance. Looking to the east you can see Mt Hobson, Gt Barrier’s highest peak, in the distance.

If you are feeling energetic you can keep walking for another 2 hrs to Kaiarara Bay, otherwise retrace your steps to the beach.
